The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 13, 1986 and became number 1 in the UK for four weeks in November 1986. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 1986.
The film stars Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Meg Ryan, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt. Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and his back-seater, Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) Lt. j.g.
